Fun Fore Funds

On September 7th, Mother Nature and a rumored pagan sacrifice combined to provide a break in the weather for the 10th Living with CF Golf Tournament. As you can tell from the pictures, we had a pleasant mix of blue sky and clouds that held on to their contents. The golfers attire will also tell you that the temperature was a delicate balance, too.

31 players turned out for this year’s event; evenly divided between veterans and newcomers. 5 non-players joined us for the tasty lunch of tenderloin, meatballs, pasta, corn on the cob, tossed salad and bread followed up with a sinful chocolate cake. The 5 individuals who believed the weather forecasters rather than our promises ensured seconds were available for the hungrier players.

We not only achieved the “fun” noted in the title, but we also raised over $2,600 for the programs CFFC offers to the local CF community.

While fun and funds were primary objectives, the players also took home some material benefits. Each player received a gift bag containing golf balls, tees and coupons. Maddie Skavienski and Allan Mason picked up wine baskets for hitting closest to the pin on holes 4 and 9, respectively. No one claimed the hole-in-one prizes available on the four par 3 holes. The other goodies were selected from the prize table by the teams based on their final score. The results were:

  • #1: With a score of 29, were Mitchell DeWolf, Tyler Collins, Joseph Ruffalo and Tyrell Teabout
  • T2: Sam Perrone, Paul Plant, Vince Perrone and Kollin Maxwell combined their 31 with a birdie on #6 to visit the table second
  • T2: Tom Skavienski, Maddie Skavienski, Noah Skavienski and Matt Piston also shot 31
  • #4: Even though we didn’t get them in a picture, Julie Maxon, Joan Updaw and Frank Kurz placed fourth with their 32.
  • T5: A bogey on the third hole was enough for Dan Sullivan, Jamie Romeo, Kristen Shaw and Erin Shaw to break the tie at 34
  • T6: Another 34 was scored by Allan Mason, Aaron Huss, Sue Smith and Greg Smith
  • #7: There were still good prizes left for Terry Hine, Ian Anderson, Loryl Stahl and Bruse Oliver with their 37

A good share of the credit for a successful tournament goes to the sponsors and we have many to thank. They supported us in five ways:

  • P Gannon Fitzpatrick financed the player gift bags (and more)
  • Doug and Ann Stewart (on behalf of Stewart Tree Farm) covered the insurance for the hole-in-one opportunities.
  • Marketview Liquor provided the wine baskets for the closest-to-the-pin prizes.
  • The merchandise on the prize table came from Morgan’s Crossing Golf, Lakeshore Country Club, Wright Distributing, Wegmans and Allan Mason
  • Individual holes were sponsored by Dan and Jane Sullivan (2 holes), Jeff and Jackie Goldberger (2 holes), the Dwyer Family, Kevin and Val Donovan, Carl Jutzin, Jerry and Nancy DeFelice, and Kristen Shaw.

Beyond the players and sponsors, we are grateful for the behind the scenes support that make an event work.

We were glad to return to our tournament home at Southern Meadows Golf Club. PGA pro Mike Clawson organized the club’s support and acted as official scorer. The course was in great shape thanks to groundskeeping efforts of Rick Clawson and Bruce Bethmann. [Rick was kind enough to mow the greens in the rain and Bruce placed the pins for “easy” putts.] Molly Quirk keeps the club looking good with her flower beds and fresh coat of paint in the clubhouse. Of equal importance, Rick, Bruce and Molly prepared and served our lunch.

Last but not least, event organization was provided by tournament co-chairs Greg Smith and Tom Skavienski with an assist from our photographer Leisha Cuddihy.
